Playtime for OnTheFlip editor Nicolai Hartvig

to OntheFlip -a brand-new webzine, showcasing and purveying quality music worldwide...

We're finally up and running. After two years of stress and planning, OnTheFlip is now on-line, delivering extensive coverage of a range of musical genres. OnTheFlip will provide news, interviews, features, reviews and much more. Our mission is to become a fresh web source for lovers of great music and investigate the flipside of the scene.

Our initial plan was to launch an OnTheFlip radioshow and well... that's still the plan. But let's wait and see how much we can fit into our busy schedule. Stay tuned!

OnTheFlip was conceived in 2002 and born out of pure love of music in 2004.

In 2002, I was producing a radio show at the Studenterradio in Århus, Denmark, fuelled by a passion for jazzy and soulful sounds of past, present and future. Music has always been a part of my life, both through musicianship and an unabated lust for new sounds and knowledge of music. I decided to move to London and was faced with the task of finding a new station for my Soulsession radioshow.

I had always been compulsively drawn to the written word, if only as another means of sharing my musical discoveries with the world. There's so much beautiful music out there and most of it is confined to the shadows, starved by financial limitations as major record labels and media monopolise public conscience. It has become the task of music lovers themselves to educate each other and fight for the survival of the music they love so dearly.

OnTheFlip is my contribution to this struggle. It allows me to write about my passion and hopefully open people's eyes and expand their minds. The internet format allows any curious music lover to log-on to OnTheFlip and hopefully discover something new. The site is completely non-profit. It has no sponsors -occasional banners exclusively promote causes that we believe in.

Hope you enjoy the site and oh yeah, almost forgot... OnTheFlip is best enjoyed with music, so throw a record on while surfin'...

Stay tuned, stay safe, see ya...

-Nicolai Hartvig

Q: Why do you give most records good reviews? Do you love everything or are you too scared to criticise?
A: Our initial reviews are all good reviews because OnTheFlip was launched without support from record companies. We were reviewing records that we bought ourselves and what would be the point of buying bad records just to give them a bad review at OnTheFlip? We give credit where it's due and are not afraid to criticise when required.

Q: How often is OnTheFlip updated?
A: As often as possible. We all have studies or dayjobs to do, so we fit in OnTheFlip wherever possible. There is no fixed update timetable. We advise you to subscribe to our no-spam and no-filler newsletter to be informed of updates. Send an email to list@ontheflip.com

Q: What's with the radio thing?
A: We're working on getting this done. Our editor was doing a show called Soulsession back in his country of origin Denmark and he wants to get this back on clock. Time permitting..but it will happen!

Q: Who are the OnTheFlip staff?
A: This varies all the time. OnTheFlip is based on contributions from unpaid freelance writers who indulge us in their passion for music. We're always looking for new writers and photographers. If you want to get involved and write for OnTheFlip, contact the editor at the email address above.

We're constantly designing new flyers to promote OnTheFlip. All flyers will be based on artwork by ourselves, our friends and artists we admire.

We hope that OnTheFlip flyers will eventually become collectables -so please collect them. Each series of flyers will be labelled differently.

The first flyer will be posted here very soon. If you would like to help us out by posting flyers at your local venues, record stores, cafés, etc., e-mail us on editor@ontheflip.com
