Duplaix : Galaxy (K7)
Philly soul man Duplaix bounces back from his sub-par debut album
in great style. Spaced broken soul with a killer bassline addition
by Charlie Dark on the flipside. Ace!
Damn! : Leaving
this planet (Raw Fusion)
Latest act to break out of the Raw Fusion fold and what a treat!
Leaving this planet is a summerific waveride of smooth
upbeat soulfunk, while Yam Who bring a nice Restless Soul-style
discofied house remix.
Johnny Darkos
: Supreme love (Gamm)
Jazz lovers should watch out for this, ie. buy it. Jazz purists
should watch out for this, ie. it might offend them. Kraftwerk man
Darkos beats up John Coltrane's Love Supreme classic with
wonderful effect. Toe-tapper!

: No love / didn't you know? -Yah Who reworks (Yam Who)
We like Yam Who and this soulful double rework does it for us. Didn't
you know works best in its instrumental passages and No
love just works a wonderful bounce, dammit!. Let's have that
backyard barbecue!
Erykah Badu
: On & on -Summer in Sydney remix (Off Beat)
Another little Badu bootleg, this time on transparent green 7"
vinyl. The classic On & on is deliciously fused with
the melody and orchestration of Quincy Jones' Summer in the
city. Could also be good for summer at the beach.
Common Factor
: In trouble's arms (Soma)
The most hotly debated track in the OnTheFlip office this month.
Is the opening of the track a warped sample of the Rocky anthem
Eye of the Tiger? We do agree that it leads to a superb
slice of paced and deep Detroit tech.
The Beatconductor
: Crazy in Kingston (Gamm)
Beyoncé's addictive Crazy in love anthem is oildrummed-up
as a Kingston reggae boogie. A sureshot smile-widener and feet-mover.
The Gamm label is getting hotter by the minute. Ayce, mon!
Plej : Blue
-Akufen remix (Exceptional)
Not one of our favourites off the great Plej album, but still a
nice little housey tune for garden days. Akufen swings it well,
bouncing and cutting the beats a little more, but with restraint.
Nice and laidback.
Directions
: Busted trees (Diaspora)
A surprisingly light and inevitably driving remix by Carl Craig,
but the original takes seat of honour on this beautiful 12".
Slightly bossa soul of the highest caliber, not unlike Sade but
miles better. We predict a summer classic!
